New passing lane improves B.C. Highway 16 driving conditions

October 31, 2017 – Construction of a new two-kilometre eastbound passing lane has been completed near Tyhee Lake on Highway 16, improving safety and efficiency for motorists.

“Highway 16 is an essential corridor that supports economic growth in the region, and these sections of road experience high volumes of commercial transport trucks,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena. “This passing lane will help alleviate traffic congestion, improve safety and so be a better experience for both commercial and public drivers.”

As part of this $6.5-million project, improvements were also made to the George Frontage Road access to Highway 16 and the Bulkley View Rest Area, including new lighting, a new pit toilet, wheelchair access to picnic tables and acceleration and deceleration lanes for safer access.

The ministry is committed to rehabilitating highways and bridges throughout British Columbia, and to building new infrastructure where it is needed. The B.C. government will continue to invest in transportation infrastructure for the safe, reliable and efficient movement of people and goods.
